Our mission

Our mission

Our mission

Nu Trans Movement Inc, provides assistance, training and education to local and state institutions to increase understanding & decrease the societal stigma that's associated with Transgender people. In Dallas, Texas the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the country with about 7.5 million residents, NTMI works to improve the quality of life for Trans folks primarily through our Identity Document Assistance Program (Name Change) and referrals to trans-friendly physicians that provide Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Mental Health Counseling (Individual & Family) and HIV Prevention & Care.

Our vision

Our mission

Our mission

Nu Trans Movement Inc, envisions a world in which Transgender people are valued as a contributing member of society. A world in which trans people of color are not murdered for simply living their truth. For this vision to become a reality, we must work together to rebuild systems and cultures that are designed to negatively affect certain demographics of people.

Our History

Our mission

Our History

Nu Trans Movement, Inc was founded in 2016 by a transgender activist for the specific purpose of improving the quality of life for black transgender non-conforming people in the deep south. We have provided local & national training to correct the underlying system of transphobia and discrimination in community and health.  We continuously engage with teen and adult trans-folk to focus on a healthy and safe transition.

Texas Trans Name and Gender Change Peer Navigation Program

There are many reasons why people choose to change their names: to bring one’s name into congruence with one’s identity, to signify the beginning of a new phase of life.

Texas law allows a person to change his or her name for any reason, except to hide from creditors or law enforcement. Completing the name change process in Texas is not as simple as signing a form and appearing before a judge. Navigating the system with experienced personnel and legal counsel can make the process easier.

Nu Transgender Movement, Inc, provides Minor and Adult Name/ Gender Change services to meet the needs of the LGBTQ community in Texas. With over 7 years of experience in this field and over 100 happy clients, we believe we are uniquely qualified to assist you with all of your Transgender Name Change matters.

Our staff are active in local and national Transgender organizations, including Trans Law Center, National Center for Transgender Equality, Resource Center Dallas and Transgender Education Network of Texas.

If you were convicted of a felony, you must wait two years after you complete your entire sentence before you may ask for a name change.

  1. If you finished your sentence in jail, you would need to wait two years from the day you were released.
  2. If you were in jail and then released on parole, you would need to wait two years from the day you are discharged from parole.
  3. If you were placed on probation, you will need to wait two years from the day you complete the probation.

Your DPS Criminal History Report may also include enough sentencing information that you can use it as proof to show it’s been more than two years since you completed your sentence.

NOTE: A new Texas law was passed in 2019. Now, if you’ve been convicted of a felony, you can change your name to the primary name listed in your criminal history without waiting two years. This may help if you’ve been using your chosen name for a long time, and your chosen name is the primary name in your criminal history. You can check which names are listed in your criminal history by getting your DPS Criminal History Report.
